Hi!
I know the three partitions now on McCleary but I was informed that there used to be an archive directory/workspace that is used for backup. So I am wondering is there still a space for archive or we have to backup the data through other ways (other than on the cluster)?
Thanks!
Hi @yfei, what kind of data are you looking to backup/archive?
In general, I try to separate “backup” and “archive”, as I think they serve two different purposes. Backups are short-term co-located copies of data/files that protect against accidental loss of data. An archive is for long-term storage of data you no longer need frequent access to.
On McCleary, we have backups (and snapshots) of your home space that we maintain. Project and “YCGA work” data are snapshot so that you can retrieve recently deleted data (within the past two days), but are not backed up. Take a look at our docs pages on Backups and Snapshots, and YCGA Data for more information.
I’m also happy to address any more questions you might have.
Hi @langford! Thank you so much for the information!
So I might need to backup/archive large data like YCGA sequencing files. Then for backup, we might need to backup through google drive/box. And for archive, do we have such partition on McCleary? The data are currently stored in projects partition. And I guess in general, the purpose is to make sure we don’t lose any data accidentally and stored those we don’t use often in a safe place (ideally with less cost). Please correct me if I had anything wrong!
Thanks!
